Immigration Policy in the United States

Writing Activity: Letter to an Elected Official

Language arts lesson

Overview

Immigration is a hotly debated issue in California and throughout the United States. In this activity, students will explore legislative proposals to address the immigration issue. They will then decide which proposal is the best and write a letter to an elected official explaining their position. This lesson is designed to provide students with a positive method of civic engagement that applies their language arts skills to an important public policy issue.

Part I: Opening Prayer and Warm-Up

After reading the Gospel passage from Matthew 25:31–46, students will share their initial thoughts about how immigration should be addressed in the United States.

Part II: Activity — Writing a Letter to an Elected Official

In this activity, students will examine different solutions presented in the immigration debate and identify what they believe to be the most appropriate solution(s).  Students will then explain their position in a letter written to an elected official.

Part III: Reflection

Students will brainstorm other ways to influence public policy and assess the effectiveness of each.
