THE THREE C’S OF CIVICS EDUCATION:
Competence, Confidence, Caring
In every subject and in every grade, we have an opportunity to inspire our youth to make a difference. That’s civics education, and it’s rooted in fostering Competence, Confidence and Caring.
Students need to have a basic understanding of your subject material. That’s Competence, and it’s foundational. But how students use that knowledge makes all the difference. As teachers, we can help students develop their Confidence by also teaching them to practice the skills that make good citizens – critical thinking, oral and written communication, teamwork, listening, respecting new points of view. The final link is Caring. When we help them connect the material they study to the issues within their own community and lives, we help to overcome complacency and help students realize that they can make a difference.
